Cellular phones have become so common place that virtually everyone has one. Cellular communication is simply a modern use of radio technology.
One of the newest buzz words is "5-G" or 5th generation cellular. It is a technology that combines 4-G frequencies and tech with newer millimeter waves at higher frequencies. Many smart meters and cellular systems are adopting 5-G. The new part of the technology involves on-demand wave form beaming. This is a directional beam from the emitter directly to the device that is requesting information.
The higher the frequency, the shorter the actual carrier wave is. These waves measure in millimeters where non-5-G/lower frequency radio waves can be feet or even yards long. Higher frequency waves have the ability to carry considerably more data and are thus ideal for our information rich cellular usage like video streaming and live gaming. Earlier cell phone frequencies up to and including 4-G were of longer wavelengths which penetrate building materials effectively but are not able to carry as much data.
However, high frequencies such as these millimeter waves are much weaker and do not penetrate building materials as effectively. They still can have an effect inside, but are far less of a concern than say, your WiFi or baby monitor.
5-G is most common and useful outdoors and in "line-of-sight" to the emitter. Originally, they were said to only transmit on demand. However recent surveys indicate constant transmission. 5-G inside a building usually includes a receiver outside which is linked by a wire directly to a repeater or series of repeaters inside in order to overcome the building material penetration limitations of the weaker radio wave.
A newer problem is that over one million new emitters are being placed in shopping centers , sports arenas, and neighborhoods across the US in the next several months.
The main point is, IT IS NOT going away and it is only becoming more prevalent. We live in an ever-increasing invisible soup of radio waves, electric fields, magnetic fields and "dirty electricity."
There is a lot of opposition to 5-G among certain health conscious groups due to it's harmful affects on biology. But currently the vast majority of cellular data (over 90%) is still traveling over 4-G wavelengths. So we are safe right? Well, all radio including 2-G, 3-G, and 4-G also has an impact on health at a cellular level. (See resource articles on the "Important Links" tab.
FUTURE:
6-G, it is said, plans to use the human body as the antenna in the future.
